The Peasantry and the Peasant Insurrectionary Movement of 1917–1921 in Mykhailo Hrushevskyi’s Works of the Pre-Soviet Period

Abstract
The illustration of the peasantry and the peasant insurrectionary movement of 1917–1921 in Mykhailo Hrushevskyi’s works of the pre-Soviet period has been studied. The input of the scientist into the research of the scientific problem of the stated period has been identified, the factual material has been singled out and its scientific evaluative aspects have been generalized. In particular, it has been shown that the peasantry in M. Hrushevskyi’s historical concept occupied one of the leading positions and was the main social basis of Ukrainian national renaissance. The attention has been drawn to the scientist’s confidence in the ability of the peasants to organize their struggle notwithstanding its spontaneity. Moreover the research expresses the belief of the famous statesman that the Ukrainian peasantry was ready to struggle for its interests using weapons. The special attention has been drawn to M. Hrushevskyi’s publicist works where he mentions the important role of peasantry and their liberation struggle within the context of the Ukrainian revolution of 1917–1921, emphasizes the participation of Ukrainian Free Cossacks movement in defending the statehood of Ukraine. It has been summarized that at the initial stage of the Ukrainian Revolution M. Hrushevskyi’s works devoted to the peasantry and the peasant insurrectionary movement of that time made significant influence on the first evaluation given to peasantry and its insurrectionary movement during the stated period, and no doubt they are a weighty component of protohistoriography of the peasant insurrectionary movement of 1917–1921.Downloads
