Questions of formation, development and prospects of the cold steel forensic theory are studied in the article, the possibility of this type of research and its scope are discussed. Theoretical approaches to the definition of the forensic theory in the system are named. Main approaches to the theory vision of the development of the forensic knife analysis are found out; the vision of opportunities of new methods and approaches to the forensic knife analysis is improved as well. Arguments to the need for more detailed study of a range of issues, taking into account modern approaches and methods of research are given. In addition, it initiated a number of issues that have to improve the quality of assessments, taking into account new technical capabilities and scientific approaches in the field of expertise. The characteristic of cognitive techniques and patterns that are used in the field of the forensic knife analysis is presented. Expediency of trace evidence examination methods and tracking objects to have left these traces is explained. Analysis of literature and expert practice shows that there are many scientific problems in the forensic knife analysis.
