Abstract

Social and legal status of Kievan Rus period prince’s squad are being researched in the article. For their full unfolding the author divides the article into two parts. In the first part Norman and Antinorman theories of Kievan Rus origin and the position of modern science toward the state origin are being highlighted. Focusing on the last position, the author analyzes the activity of the prince as a basic in the country’s development and also its integral part – the squad. Unity and interintergrity of these links is stipulated by the necessity of maintenance and consolidation of the prince’s authority in the country, consolidation of power in the state, defending the borders against nomads and territory expansion in Europe. To achieve this, the prince’s endowed the squad with the various benefits: salary, allotment, property, seats on his Board and influence on the national importance decisions. Such a privileged position of his squad can be observed in the first written codified digest of customary law – Russka Pravda (the second part of the article). The analysis of its norms testifies legal protection and the hierarchy of penalties in favor of the squad as people closely related to the prince. Thus, the approach to the prince’s squad, from boyars to tiuns was privileged. Their social and legal position people closely related to the prince, is manifested in the social life and in the legal field of activity. Defending means and penalties hierarchy has been forming considering the victim’s and the subject’s of attacks social status.
